Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth) Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha today, August 20, 2025. In this bill, there will be a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and State Ministers who are arrested or kept in custody for more than 30 days on account of serious criminal offences. Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya addressed the press in the state capital regarding this bill. Mr Bhattacharya said, “According to this Bill, if a Minister is sentenced to five years on any charge and remains in jail for 30 days, he will have to step down from the post. Obviously, the Prime Minister or the BJP ministers will not be sent to jail. This provision is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments and not to allow them to function.”
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s reaction to the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025
All India Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee also addressed the media regarding this bill. Addressing the media, and as reported by PTI, Abhishek Banerjee said that there are serious charges against 28 ministers in the third National Democratic Alliance (NDA) cabinet of the Modi government. According to Mr Banerjee, 19 of these ministers face charges of murder, rape, and other heinous crimes. He questioned that does the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intend to remove criminals, or do they want to clear the names of ministers who join their party of any crime? He added that if the BJP’s intentions were genuine, then leaders like Himanta Biswa Sarma, Suvendu Adhikari, and others would not have been freed of all charges after joining the BJP.
