MLA T Raja Singh, a Telangana state legislator, was suspended by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday due to his divisive remarks against Islam.

Tuesday morning, amid demonstrations against his remarks across the city, the Hyderabad police detained BJP MLA T Raja Singh for his allegedly offensive comments about the Prophet in a video broadcast on social media, according to officials.

BJP suspended MLA Thakur Raja Singh, the party issued a notice stating the same.

The 45-year-old Goshamahal resident and two-term MLA have a devoted following in his district and the adjacent districts of Hyderabad, especially for his ferocious “gau rakshak” persona. He was the only serving BJP MLA out of a total of five who kept his seat in the December 2018 Assembly elections, which took place amid a pro-Telangana Rashtra Samithi wave. G Kishan Reddy, who is currently a minister in the Union, and K Laxman, a Rajya Sabha member, were among those who lost.

Singh, a Bajrang Dal member from Mangalhat, began his political career in 2009 as a TDP municipal councilor. He joined the BJP before the 2014 general elections and was successful in taking the Goshamahal Assembly seat away from Congress.

Singh frequently asserts that his ancestors lived in Hyderabad for many years and made idols of gods and goddesses as a source of income.

More than 75 FIRs have been filed against the BJP MLA, most of them centered around hate speech, curfew infractions, and disruption of law and order. He frequently makes statements or sends threats on social media to anyone who is against the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

According to BJP sources, party officials do not always agree with Raja Singh’s statements or actions. “He makes his own choices.” He seldom meets or discusses with party officials and maintains a distance. Senior leaders tolerate him since he is a party loyalist.
