The exclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup 2025 team has taken the fans and cricket fans by surprise. The Indian batter did not receive a selection despite his excellent performance in the domestic cricket and the Punjab Kings making it to the final of the IPL 2025. His name was not even on the reserves list and this raised eyebrows.
Father Voices Disappointment Over Asia Cup 2025 Omission
Shreyas’ father Santosh Iyer was not happy with the decision. “I don’t know what else Shreyas has to do to make it to the Indian T20 team. He has been performing so well in the IPL year after year, from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders to Punjab Kings, and that too as a captain,” he said.
He also pointed out the leadership success of his son. “He even captained KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and led PBKS to the final this year,” Santosh added. Though this is a setback, he added that Shreyas is well grounded and takes situations in his stride.
Shreyas Iyer’s Calm Approach to Setback
“I am not saying make him the Indian captain, but at least select him in the team. Even if he’s left out, he never shows dissent. He’ll simply say, ‘Mera naseeb hai’ (It’s my luck; you can’t do anything now). He is always cool and calm,” Santosh noted.
“He doesn’t blame anybody, but deep inside he must be naturally disappointed,” he admitted. This has earned Shreyas respect among fans as he has remained strong even when he is ignored despite his good performance in major events under pressure.
Former Cricketers Question Selection Choices
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif also raised the question of the absence of Shreyas Iyer. He stated that selectors and management did not recognise his in-form status since IPL 2025. Even cricket fans and cricket analysts were of the same opinion and felt that a player of his calibre should at least have been in the squad or standby list.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the concerns, explaining, “With regards to Shreyas, it’s not his fault, nor is it ours. It’s just that you can pick 15, and at the moment you’ll have to wait for his chance.” Kaif said that he could not even comprehend why his name was not even in standbys.

Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion has sparked a huge debate on twitter. His consistency and leadership in IPL 2025, were the reasons cited by his fans as to why he should be included. Kaif, speaking on his YouTube channel, reinforced the sentiment, noting, “Shreyas Iyer’s name didn’t come up; the selectors said that it was a difficult task to fit him since only 15 could be selected.”
