Midtown Manhattan Shooting Live Updates: NYPD Officer, Three Civilians Killed By Gunman Armed With AR-15
Midtown Manhattan Shooting: A New York Police Department officer and three civilians, two men and one woman, were fatally shot by a gunman who opened fire inside a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, before turning the weapon on himself, authorities said.
The shooter, identified by law enforcement sources as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, stormed into the 44-story tower at around 6:30 p.m. during rush hour. The building, located in the heart of Manhattan, is home to major firms including Blackstone and the National Football League headquarters.
NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a four-year veteran of the force, was among those killed in the attack. Islam, a married father of two with a third child on the way, was remembered as a hero by city officials.
“Our city lost a true protector,” said Mayor Eric Adams at a late evening press conference alongside Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “Officer Islam put his life on the line to protect others — his bravery will never be forgotten.”
Officials confirmed that Tamura was armed with an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. According to *The New York Post*, the firearm appeared to be equipped with a 30-round magazine, a detail that highlights the lethal capacity of the weapon used.
The AR-15 is a commonly available firearm in the U.S., often used for sport shooting and home defense.

Tamura’s former coach, Walter Roby, said that he was “elusive and agile,” was “quiet,” and was well-mannered.
Roby had coached him, reportedly, at Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles.
A former classmate, Caleb Clarke, said one could never associate “violence” with him. Reports say Clarke had been in touch with Tamura through social media.
The police officials of Las Vegas stated that Tamura was suffering from mental health issues. They said in a press conference that “Mr. Tamura” was a “documented mental health” patient. Reports added that Tamura was a former employee of a casino in Las Vegas and had also worked as a security guard.
Meanwhile, the New York Police Department said Tamura could have been frustrated with his mental health, as a note was found with him with the words CTE written on it. It’s a brain situation that is associated with trauma.
Jessica Tisch, the Commissioner of NYPD, said CCTV footage showed Tamura left his car with a rifle in hand, entered the building, and then started to fire immediately.
Tisch said, “The building security camera footage shows the shooter” as he entered the lobby, before he turned right and immediately opened fire on an “NYPD officer.”
The 27-year-old killer was a resident of Las Vegas and lived with his parents in a gated neighborhood. Reports say that in 2021, his parents bought the apartment at a cost of USD 383,000, which contained three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
CNN anchor Erin Burnett has come under fire on social media following a remark made during live coverage of the Park Avenue mass shooting. While discussing the suspect, Shane D. Tamura, Burnett described him as “possibly white,” sparking swift criticism from viewers who claimed the statement was misleading and accused the network of promoting a false narrative.
