The finalists of the last edition of the T20 World Cup, India and South Africa will be up against each other in the Super 8 fixture of the tournament in Ahmedabad on Sunday. While India defeated the South African team in the final of the 2024 edition, the Proteas will look to begin the Super stage on a positive note.

Here we take a look at some of the previous encounters between the two sides in the T20 World Cups.

Durban, 2007

India and South Africa locked horns with each other in the first T20 World Cup back in 2007 in Durban. Rohit Sharma struck an unbeaten 50 off 40 while MS Dhoni hit 45 off 33 that helped India put 153/5 in 20 overs. Later, bowlers did the job and restricted South Africa to 116/9 in 20 overs. RP Singh returned with figures of 4/13 in 4 overs. India’s 37-run win over them cost Proteas a semi-final berth as they finished third in their Group.

Nottingham, 2009

The two sides then met each other in Nottingham in 2009. South Africa put up 130/5 in 20 overs and then restricted India to 118/8 to win by 12 runs. AB de Villiers hit 63 off 51. Later, Johan Botha returned with figures of 3/16 in 4 overs to help the side win.

Gros Islet, 2010

This turned out to be a historic game as Suresh Raina became the first batter from India to hit hundreds in all three formats. The left-handed batter smashed 101 off 60 deliveries as India posted 186/5 in 20 overs. Later, South Africa too put in a great effort and only fell short by 14 runs. Jacques Kallis scored 73 off 54 as South Africa put 172/5 in 20 overs.

Colombo, 2012

This was the fourth meeting between India and South Africa. India won the game by 1 run but failed to go past the second round losing on NRR to Pakistan and Australia with all three teams having registered 4 points. India put up 152/6 with Suresh Raina scoring 45 off 34. In reply, Faf du Plessis struck 65 off 38 but the side was bowled out for 151.

Mirpur, 2014

India and South then met in 2014 semi-final. The Proteas batted first and posted a stiff total of 172/4 in 20 overs. Captain Faf du Plessis top-scored with 58 off 41 while Jean-Paul Duminy remained unbeaten at 45 off 40. R Aswhin picked up three wickets. But it was Virat Kohli who made headlines and single-handedly took the team into the final. Kohli smashed 72* off 44.

Perth, 2022

The 2022 edition saw South Africa emerging victorious. India could only manage 133/9 in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav struck 68 off 40. Lungi Ngidi bagged four wickets while Wayne Parnell scalped three. Later, David Miller and Aiden Markram hit individual fifties to take the side over the line by 5 wickets.

Barbados, 2024

India and South Africa played each other in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. The Men in Blue posted 176/7 in 20 overs. Kohli scored 76 off 59. Axar Patel chipped in with 47 off 31 while Shivam Dube struck 27 off 16. Later, South Africa were restricted to 169/8. Surya grabbed a blinder to send Miller back in the hut. This was India’s second T20 World Cup triumph.
