United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a big comment on the role of China in shaping the new world order. Guterres, who is in Beijing for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, spoke about China’s importance in safeguarding multilateralism.
He stressed that Beijing’s backing is important for international bodies like UN at a time when global governance is being challenged by a US-led tariff war.
“In this moment in which multilateralism is under fire, the support of China is an extremely important element to preserve,” Guterres told Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.

He added, “we see new forms of policy that are sometimes difficult to understand, that sometimes look more like a show than serious diplomatic efforts, and in which business and politics seem sometimes also mixed.”
