Police reported that a 22-year-old woman faced gang rape in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. The incident took place on Friday evening. Two men known to the woman picked her up in a car from the Bangiriposi area, promising a lucrative job opportunity. Instead of discussing work, they drove her towards Udala, about 80 kilometers away from her residence in Bangiriposi.
The woman later lodged a complaint with the police, stating that the men misled her and forcefully took her to a different location under Udala police station limits.
Three Others Join in Crime
According to the complaint, three more men joined the two accused during the journey. Together, they took the woman to a secluded area on a stretch connecting Udala and Balasore town. There, the five men allegedly raped her. Police confirmed the details while addressing the media. SDPO (Udala) Hrushikesh Nayak told reporters that the accused carried out the crime in isolation, far from public attention. The attackers later abandoned the survivor on the roadside after committing the assault, leaving her to find her way back.
The survivor approached the police with her statement, leading to the registration of a case at Udala police station. Based on the FIR, authorities launched a search operation. SDPO Hrushikesh Nayak said, “We have registered a case at Udala police station based on her statement, and an investigation is underway.” Police officials acted promptly and initiated questioning of possible suspects. The authorities assured that all legal procedures would follow to bring the accused under strict action according to the law.
Two Detained, Hunt On for Three Others
Investigators detained two persons in connection with the incident. The police confirmed that efforts are underway to track and arrest the three others who remain absconding. “The police have so far detained two persons and search is on for three others,” SDPO Hrushikesh Nayak added while briefing reporters. Police teams continue raids in different areas of Mayurbhanj and Balasore to locate the remaining accused. Authorities stated that further updates will follow as the investigation progresses and evidence is collected.
