Asia Cup’s Super Over Tradition, A Brief History

Since its inception, the Asia Cup has not included a Super Over, which is one of cricket's oddities in the face of T20s, an event that has grown incredibly popular worldwide. The absence highlights how seldom related meetings have occurred over the tournament's history.

In the cut throat, high performance game of T20 cricket, the Super Over becomes the game changer six balls, two wickets each, and the complexion of a game to be decided. Although the format has been played quite a few times in the T20 international and league games, the Asia Cup has not seen one so far. The fact that there does not seem to be any match in the history of the Asia Cup, which ended in a draw resulting in the use of a Super Over, is a simple explanation why.

In the history of the Asia Cup, was there ever a Super Over?

No Super Over has ever been contested in Asia cup match yet the possibility of it brings on an exciting tactical element. Without precedent, teams that train in wit and in composure will be adequately equipped, in the event one over shootout is ever necessitated.

Super over probability in Asia Cup

This has been evidenced by the few instances of a Super Over in the history of the Asia Cup and this does not reduce the essence of being ready in preparation of a Super Over. That possibility alone demands some planning, the batsman who hits the most explosive and the most mass consistent death over bowler might be most important. The teams should know how to behave on the pitch and how the players react to fierce passions. It does not matter whether it is a batting friendly wicket that allows the hitter to take six and an aggressive surface that promotes the bowling of yorkers and other slow deliveries, learning to adjust to the conditions is an important distinction. Asia Cup relevant numbers are just about nowhere, however, one can establish some knowledge based on the general T20I records. Conventional powers such as India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have always consistently delivered the match winners in a Super Over conditions, batsmen able to bat out of the ground when they need to and bowlers who can perform at clutch times.

What is so special about the lack of Super Over?

It is enough to remind a reader how infrequent tied matches have been in this glamorous continental competition. Other formats such as World Cup Final have, conversely, adopted Super Overs e.g., the tied showpiece games of 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final became a landmark in the adoption of the format world wide.

As teams look to the future in the Asia Cups, there is need to practice, as a Super Over is ever so close to twisting of fate. Cricket in T20 format is developing at the pace of a roller coaster ride  something that cannot happen seems most probable tomorrow. A Super Over in the next tie game where two teams are stumped in a tie, may reconstitute the drama of cricket in Asia.
