The Philadelphia Eagles have added another dynamic weapon to their offensive arsenal, acquiring John Metchie III from the Houston Texans in a trade finalized on August 18, 2025. First reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal sends the Canadian wide receiver to the reigning Super Bowl champions in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick. The Eagles also receive a 2026 sixth-rounder as part of the swap.

From Houston to Philly: A Comeback Story

Drafted 44th overall by the Texans in 2022, Metchie’s NFL career was immediately put on hold after being diagnosed with leukemia. After beating the disease, he made his debut in 2023 and followed up with a solid 2024 campaign recording 254 yards and one touchdown. Now healthy and entering the final year of his USD 8.07 million rookie deal, Metchie arrives in Philly ready for a new chapter and a bigger stage.

Eagles’ Offense Just Got Scarier

Metchie joins a loaded Eagles receiving corps that already includes A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, and Johnny Wilson. With Jalen Hurts at quarterback, the Canadian wideout brings both depth and versatility to an offense already considered one of the NFL’s most dangerous. His return to form after battling cancer has made him a league-wide inspiration.

Texans Gain Depth at Tight End

In exchange, the Texans acquire Harrison Bryant, a 26-year-old tight end with 89 career catches for 791 yards and 10 touchdowns, previously with the Browns and Eagles. Head coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized the need for “more competition and depth” at the tight end position heading into training camp.

Metchie is expected to join the Eagles at training camp on August 22, bringing not only talent but also one of the most inspiring comeback stories in the league.
