Seattle Mariners outfielder Victor Robles found himself at the center of controversy on Sunday (August 17) during a rehab assignment with the Tacoma Rainiers. After being hit by a pitch from Las Vegas Aviators pitcher Joey Estes, Robles retaliated in shocking fashion by hurling his bat at the mound.
Tensions Flare in the Third Inning
The incident occurred in the third inning when Estes delivered an up-and-in pitch that struck Robles on the shoulder. Although Robles swung and missed, making it a strike, he didn’t take the hit lightly. Without hesitation, Robles picked up his bat and threw it toward Estes. Fortunately, the bat missed the pitcher.
Robles was immediately ejected by the home plate umpire but attempted to charge the mound. Umpires and players from both teams quickly intervened, and both benches cleared to prevent the situation from escalating further. As he exited, Robles flung an entire bucket of sunflower seeds onto the field in a final act of frustration.
Rehab Assignment Turns Ugly
Sunday’s game was Robles’ fifth outing with the Rainiers as part of his rehab assignment after suffering a left shoulder injury in April. Notably, he had already been hit by pitches three times in the previous four games, likely adding to his frustration. The Aviators would go on to win the game 12-7, but the incident overshadowed the result.
A Veteran’s Career Hits Another Rough Patch
Now in his ninth MLB season, the 28-year-old Robles is no stranger to the spotlight. A key figure in the Washington Nationals’ 2019 World Series run, Robles has had a rocky journey since. He joined the Mariners in 2024 and posted a solid .307 average last season. However, injuries have limited him to just 10 Major League appearances in 2025.
With disciplinary action likely pending, Robles’ path back to the big leagues may now be further delayed—not because of injury, but because of impulse.
