Google has issued a warning to its 2.5 billion Gmail users about a security threat that could put their accounts at risk. The alert comes after the company admitted that a data breach linked to a third-party Salesforce system had exposed sensitive information earlier this year.
The incident, which happened in June, is now being seen as more serious than first reported. Google said the breach is not limited to Salesforce Drift but also affects other integrations. According to Google Threat Intelligence, the hacking group behind the attack has been identified as UNC6395. The group reportedly gained access to customer support tickets, messages, AWS access keys, Snowflake tokens, and even passwords used to access other accounts.
Forbes reported that Google has advised most Gmail users to reset their account passwords immediately to prevent hackers from getting unauthorized access. The tech giant is also urging users to enable two-factor authentication and switch to passkeys for better protection.
Although Google clarified that no Gmail passwords were directly leaked, it admitted that users could now face advanced phishing attempts. Hackers are said to be impersonating Google employees by calling or texting people, asking them to reset their passwords or share login verification codes.
The hacking group believed to be behind the attack is ShinyHunter. Experts warn that the stolen data could be used to set up phishing websites to trick users into handing over personal information.
With billions of users potentially at risk, Google’s warning serves as a reminder to strengthen account security. Simple steps like updating passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding suspicious messages could go a long way in keeping Gmail accounts safe from hackers.
