A deadly crash in Florida that killed three people has led to sharp criticism from the Trump administration against California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Reports said that Harjinder Singh, a semi-truck driver, attempted an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. As a result, the vehicle Jackknifed and rammed into a minivan, resulting in the killing of three passengers. Singh is an Indian national and allegedly entered illegally into the US, but still managed to get a commercial’s driver license by the California’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
Homeland Security Accuses California of Being ‘Asinine’
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemned the tragedy, blaming California’s policies for putting the public at risk. “Three innocent people were killed in Florida because Gavin Newsom’s California DMV issued an illegal alien a commercial driver’s license—this state of governance is asinine,” DHS posted on X. The statement added that the agency is working nonstop to remove criminal illegal immigrants and protect Americans.
The White House also criticized California, calling Singh “an Indian national granted a commercial driver’s license by the so-called ‘sanctuary state,’ whose reckless policies put American lives at risk every day.” Officials accused Newsom of sympathizing with undocumented immigrants and ignoring public safety concerns.
California Blames Donald Trump’s Government for Allowing Singh into US
Newsom’s office, however, pushed back. It pointed out that Singh had entered the U.S. during Donald Trump’s presidency, not under Newsom’s watch. Records show Singh crossed into California illegally in September 2018 and was detained by Border Patrol. He was initially marked for expedited deportation but claimed fear of returning to India. In January 2019, he was released on a $5,000 bond and placed under immigration proceedings, where he has remained since.
Newsom has long defended California’s policy of granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, saying it improves road safety. Critics, however, argue that such policies encourage illegal immigration and endanger lives.
Meanwhile, the officials of the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed that the truck in question was involved in towing a box trailer and tried to take a U-turn in a restricted section of the turnpike, resulting in the terrible accident.
