India’s Online Gaming Bill 2025: India’s fastly growing online gaming industry is making headlines again with the Union Cabinet’s approval of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 to regulate games that involve money. The proposed legislation is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha today. The bill is intended to help regulate betting applications and online platforms that are related with fraud, addiction, and money laundering.
Online gaming is used to describe digital websites and applications through which people can play games on the internet ranging from casual skill-based games to real money betting games. Skill-based gaming itself has a huge constituency, but the government is more concerned about apps that entice gamers with promises of instant money. These sites usually have no proper checks in place, and as a result, there are increasing reports of financial cheating and psychological trauma among users.
What Is the Online Gaming Bill?
The Online Gaming Bill, 2025 seeks to regulate and ban online platforms that offer games for money and proposes penalties for operators or propagators of illegal betting apps. It would give the government the capacity to block websites deemed not compliant, and it can make the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) the central regulator. The bill also addresses inconsistencies in gaming legislation within states, and it imposes penalties for illegal betting under the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, which provides up to seven years for illegal wagering.
Why Is the Government Moving Towards a Ban?
The Centre identifies addiction, fraud, and mental health threats as the greatest risks of real-money gaming. In the last three years, authorities have shut down over 1,400 unlawful gaming and betting websites, and agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate have associated such sites with money laundering and tax evasion. The new bill is required to create a uniform legal platform, put offshore operators in check, and safeguard citizens particularly youth from exploitation, officials say.
Celebrity Endorsements in Question
The matter has gained momentum as many celebrities and influencers have been found endorsing online betting websites. Recently, the Enforcement Directorate registered cases against 29 celebrities such as actors Vijay Deverakonda, Rana Daggubati, Prakash Raj, and some social media influencers for allegedly promoting illicit betting apps. Such promotions lend credibility to dubious platforms and make more youth engage in dangerous money games, say investigators.
How It Affects Children and Young Users
Teenagers and children are some of the most vulnerable populations impacted by web gambling. According to psychologists, gaming addiction is likely to cause depression, anxiety, and poor performance in school, while repeated financial loss tends to entice young users into borrowing or even risky activities. Parents have also complained that online gambling apps presented as entertainment are planting deep scars on their kids’ psyches.
