The New York Jets have made a strategic move to strengthen their defensive interior, acquiring veteran nose tackle Harrison Phillips from the Minnesota Vikings. According to reports from ESPN and NFL Network, the deal was finalized Wednesday (August 20) night and is pending a physical for Phillips.
In exchange, the Jets will send Minnesota sixth-round picks in 2026 and 2027. The Vikings will include Phillips and a 2027 seventh-rounder in the deal. Minnesota is also reportedly covering USD 3.7 million of Phillips’ USD 7.4 million salary for the 2025 season.
Clear Focus on Defensive Line Reinforcements
This trade comes just hours after the Jets sent a sixth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for defensive tackle Jowon Briggs and a 2026 seventh-round selection. The two moves signal New York’s priority to bolster depth and durability along the defensive line heading into the 2025 NFL season.
Phillips, who turns 30 in January, brings experience and toughness to the Jets. Originally drafted in the third round by Buffalo in 2018, he spent four seasons with the Bills before signing with Minnesota, where he played the last three seasons. Across seven NFL seasons, Phillips has totaled eight sacks and five fumble recoveries, earning a reputation as a stout run defender.
