John Cena recently revisited his 2006 film debut The Marine in a candid interview with PEOPLE, offering a behind-the-scenes look at what really motivated the project. According to Cena, the film wasn’t designed to launch a Hollywood career it was a strategic move by WWE to drive fans to wrestling events.
“I wasn’t there to be The Marine,” Cena admitted. “I was there to put more people in a WWE arena, and I’m proud that I got to do it. But my focus wasn’t where it needed to be.” He shared that stepping into the role while mentally focused on his wrestling career taught him an invaluable lesson: when taking on a project, be fully present.
A WWE Star Turned Movie Lead With Mixed Focus
Although The Marine offered a high-octane introduction to Hollywood, Cena said his heart remained in the ring. “You can see it in the work,” he said. “I just wanted to go back to the ring and I wasn’t mature enough to understand like, no, it’s not that simple.” Cena acknowledged that while the film was fun and allowed him to work alongside talented actors, he wasn’t ready to commit to acting in a meaningful way.
Distracted on Set and Chasing the Ring
Despite the chance to build a film career, Cena admitted he was more interested in being back in the WWE spotlight. That mindset led him to feel mentally checked out during productions, which eventually caught up to him.
Hollywood’s Wake-Up Call
Cena also opened up about his abrupt exit from the film industry in 2009, which he attributes to being cast in forgettable movies and not being fully engaged. “I thought people would watch because I was WWE Champion that wasn’t the case,” he said. Being ousted from Hollywood taught him the importance of putting in real work, regardless of fame.
