Shani Amavasya Do’s

Ancestral Rites (Tarpan)

To assist the departed souls in achieving peace and to overcome Pitra Dosh, one should bathe in a sacred river like the Ganges and perform Tarpan ceremonies.

Charity

In the name of your ancestors, distribute cooked food, simple fare like rice and lentils-to the poor and needy. 

Worship Shani Dev

Applying water and lighting a lamp for Lord Shani on this day shall lessen the adverse impact of Saturn. 

Worship Lord Vishnu

Alternatively, worship of Lord Vishnu can be undertaken, for pleasing him on Bhadrapada Amavasya is said to bestow good fortune upon the worshipper. 

White Cloth

Those who take the holy bath wear white clothes. 

Observe Pradosh Muhurta

Observe your prayers and rituals within the auspicious Pradosh Kaal from 07:01 PM to 09:17 PM on 22nd August.

Inauspicious activities should be avoided

On this crucial Amavasya, carry out major new ventures or inauspicious activities at your own risk.
