Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, praying for the well-being and prosperity of all.

In a post on X, he wished, “May this sacred occasion, filled with devotion and faith, bring auspiciousness to everyone. I pray to Lord Gajanana that He blesses all His devotees with happiness, peace, and excellent health. Ganpati Bappa Morya.”

Devotees across India and abroad celebrate the festival with decorated homes and pandals, prayers, music, and vibrant processions.

People bring Lord Ganesha idols to their homes, observe fasts, prepare mouth-watering delicacies, and visit pandals during the festival.

The first look of Mumbai’s famous Lalbaugcha Raja was unveiled on Sunday. Every year, millions of devotees come here for darshan. The unveiling of the Lalbaugcha Raja, the iconic Ganesh idol, is another main attraction of the festival.

The Maharashtra Government has officially declared the ’Sarvajanik Ganehotsav’, a festival dating back over 100 years, as the ‘Maharashtra State Festival’.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak Was The Man Behind Making the One-Day Festival To Mass Celebration

Before 1893, the festival was a one-day affair, largely observed in private. However, that year marked a significant change, leading to the large gathering, vast decorations and several processions for mass celebrations.

The great nationalist and patriot Bal Gangadhar Tilak, referred to as ‘Lokmanya’, or the Leader of the People, was the man who made the one-day festival a public celebration to mobilise people against the British rule in India.

It was the time when the 19th century witnessed the emergence of nationalists who spoke about civil and political rights and raised voices against British rule. Tilak was one of those who had the most radical goal: Swaraj (self-rule), and for this, Tilak had to mobilise the people.
