A United States court ordered a spyware manufacturer to pay $167 million to WhatsApp. The court’s ruling came in a 2019 hacking campaign where more than 1,400 WhatsApp users were compromised using the manufacturer NSO’s Pegasus spyware.

WhatsApp initiated the lawsuit, asserting violations of federal and state hacking laws.

An Appleinsider report also stated that a new spyware campaign required no interaction to compromise an iPhone, which chained WhatsApp and a flaw in iOS 18.6 to expose users to a ‘zero-click’ hack.

As per reports, Apple described it as an “extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.

WhatsApp also responded to the issue and released a notification. This is not the first time that WhatsApp has faced security challenges from government spyware.

According to a report by India Today, WhatsApp has recently prevented a spyware campaign that targeted approximately 90 individuals in Italy.

However, the Italian government denied involvement in such a spyware campaign due to the lack of investigation into the misuse. It also sparked the ongoing concerns over state-sponsored surveillance activities.
