Auburn University is rewriting its football history books by officially recognizing seven additional national championships, bringing the Tigers’ total count to nine. The decision, announced in August 2025, marks a significant shift in how the program honors its past success on the gridiron.
Previously, Auburn had acknowledged just two national titles 1957 and 2010, earned by finishing No. 1 in the AP Poll or by winning the BCS Championship. Now, championships from 1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004 will be formally added to the program’s legacy.
Honoring Overlooked Greatness
Athletic Director John Cohen explained the move as a long-overdue tribute to teams that met championship standards under NCAA-recognized selectors. “For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program’s storied history,” he said. “We’re aligning our visible national championship recognitions with the NCAA record book and our peers.”
Some of the newly acknowledged teams had remarkable seasons. In 1993, Auburn went 11-0 under first-year coach Terry Bowden but was ineligible for postseason play due to NCAA sanctions. The 2004 Tigers, led by future NFL stars Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown, and Jason Campbell, also went undefeated but were controversially left out of the BCS title game.
Following a Broader College Football Trend
Auburn isn’t alone in this retroactive recognition. Before the modern playoff era began in 1998, college football national titles were often awarded by independent selectors. Programs like Alabama, USC, and Minnesota have also retroactively claimed titles based on historical rankings.
In this context, Auburn’s updated count is not unusual it reflects a growing trend in college football to fairly credit teams that were recognized as the best in their time.

With nine national championships now in the record books, Auburn takes a bold step in celebrating its full football heritage giving past players, coaches, and fans the recognition they’ve long deserved.
