The weightlifting team of India demonstrated an overwhelming performance at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad and secured seven medals in total with numerous record breaking performances in different classes.
Man of the moment, Sairaj Pardeshi
The limelight was on 18 year old Sairaj Pardeshi who gave a melodramatic performance in the junior men 88 kg division. He lifted 348 kg (157 kg snatch+191 kg clean And jerk) to break several junior Commonwealth records, and even exceeding the number of the senior category winner. The youth boys 94 kg division saw Parv Chaudhary record three new records and a total weight of 337 kg (149 kg snatch and 188 kg clean and jerk) as he won both the junior and the youth categories.

Other lifters also earned the nation a share of the medals. Hussain Shah has been given the youth gold in the 88 kg category with an overall lift of 267 kg (115 kg snatch and 152 kg clean and jerk). At the same time, in the older divisions Dilbag Singh was just beaten to gold by the men in the 94 kg competition, he made a respectable show with silver following a very close contest.

Mirabai Chanu and her incredible finish
A second notable event was by the returnee Mirabai Chanu who became the inaugural winner in a new 48 kg category. She became the first person to win the field (a total of 193 kg) and she broke three Commonwealth records in her category to further establish her elite status before the World Championships.
This excellent performance allowed not only to bring hometown glory to India but also made the country a force on the Commonwealth level weightlifting. India has the brightest future in the sport since young talents such as Pardeshi and Chaudhary are making headway in the world.
