Govt Orders Closure Of Sonam Wangchuk's HIAL Over Alleged Land Encroachment In Ladakh

In a move that has stirred fresh controversy amid the ongoing unrest in Ladakh, the administration has issued a closure notice to the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) a pioneering educational initiative founded by prominent innovator and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk. The notice cites alleged illegal land encroachment as the primary reason for the action.

According to officials, the institute is accused of occupying government land without formal authorization. A senior revenue official confirmed that the step was taken following “a series of inspections and multiple complaints” regarding the institute’s expansion over the past few years.

HIAL, established in the Phyang region near Leh, is known for promoting sustainable living, climate resilience, and alternative learning models tailored to high-altitude ecosystems. The institute has drawn global attention for its eco-friendly architecture, solar-powered facilities, and emphasis on practical education for mountain communities.

The timing of the notice, however, has raised eyebrows. Wangchuk has been a vocal advocate for constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh and has led several peaceful protests demanding protection of tribal identity, land, and resources. He recently ended a long hunger strike after repeated calls for dialogue with the Centre went unanswered.

Several civil society groups and student bodies have condemned the government’s action, calling it a “targeted move” to silence dissent. “This isn’t just about land it’s about suppressing a voice that has peacefully highlighted Ladakh’s issues,” said a local activist.

As of now, Sonam Wangchuk has not issued an official statement, but sources close to him say legal options are being explored.

Meanwhile, tensions remain high in Ladakh, as this development adds a new dimension to the region’s growing discontent with central policies.
