Parliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: The Central government is set to introduce The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Lok Sabha, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah moving it in the House. The proposed amendment seeks to address a gap in the 2019 Reorganisation Act by ensuring that Chief Ministers or Ministers facing serious criminal charges, including imprisonment and detention, cannot continue to hold office. By empowering the Lieutenant Governor to dismiss a Minister or even the Chief Minister under such circumstances, the government aims to uphold constitutional morality, strengthen accountability, and protect public confidence in governance.

However, the move has triggered speculation about its larger political intent. While the amendment appears to target issues of governance and integrity in public office, questions remain on whether it signals steps towards restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood or marks another phase in the Centre’s continuing control over the region. Since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which revoked J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories, the demand for statehood has been one of the most debated issues in the Valley. Against this backdrop, the new Bill has become a focal point of political debate and uncertainty.

BJP MP Anurag Thakur says, “What is the opposition protesting against, morality or corruption? After all, in Indian politics, if we talk about resigning on the basis of morality and against corruption, and then about making laws, why does the opposition oppose this? Today, the fight is clear: who stands with the corrupt – the opposition; and who is free from corruption – the BJP. The opposition and such actions that took place in Parliament have shamed democracy and have also shown that the opposition stands with corruption and is ready to go to any extent to protect the corrupt.” #WATCH...
