Who Won UK Council Elections Yesterday?

The 2026 is still not declared till now (while writing). Many county councils and London boroughs are counting throughout the day. However, the pictures have started to get clearer.

Reform UK has won its first council of the night, Newcastle-under-Lyme by winning 24 seats out of 44 seats whereas the Labour down 14 and conservatves down 10. The Reform have also won Tameside, where Labour lost control with all 19 seats declared, Labour was down 16 and Reform up 18 while in Brentwood and Southend, both the parties do not gain overall control as Reform won 7 seats and Labour won 8 seats.

Westminster City Council is the biggest result of the night for the Conservatives. The party regained control from Labour’s by winning 32 seats out of 54 seats.

The Liberal Democrats have won the Portsmouth by gaining three seats, In Richmond upon Thames (London), the party won all the seats of the council, i.e. 45 seats.

The Lib Dems also lost their majority on Hull, but still remains the biggest party in the council

The Greens are up 22 councillors, winning in several urban areas consisting of Ealing and Exeter, through their strong national influence is not helping them in local election

what does no party majority mean in council elections ?

No party majority or no overall control means that after an election, no single party has won enough seats to govern the council on its own. If no party manages to win more than half of all the seats in a council, then there are few possible outcomes:

  • Alliance: Two or more parties agree to work together, combining their seats to form a majority and share power.

  • Minority Administration: The largest party tries to govern the council alone, even without a majority. They can pass decisions but there is always a risk of being outvoted by the other parties combining against them.

  • Confidence and supply: A smaller party agrees to support the largest party on major votes such as budget without formally making an alliance.
