The reign of Queen Elizabeth II came to an end on Thursday when she passed away in Scotland. A double rainbow was visible across Buckingham Palace when the news first broke, which is thought to symbolise the marriage of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in heaven.
Images of the double rainbow were widely shared on Twitter along with posts lamenting the demise of the king.
The romance between Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip was reminiscent of a fairytale or romantic comedy. When she was just thirteen years old, she first met him and fell in love. They started writing to one other as Prince Philip reciprocated their sentiments, and by the time the Queen reached 21 in 1946–1947, their engagement was formally proclaimed.
During his time in the military, Prince Philip was known as “Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy.” On November 20, 1947, the day before he married Elizabeth, he was officially given the titles “Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich.”
The Royal couple were the first British royal pair to celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary in 2017, having been married for more than 70 years.
When Prince Philip passed away on April 9, 2021, at Windsor Castle at the age of 99 from old age, they grew apart. The Queen was devastated by his passing and said it “created a big vacuum in her life.”
