King Charles III on Monday, delivered his first speech to Parliament as the ruler of the United Kingdom.
After his mother Queen Elizabeth II passed away last week, King Charles III was declared the next king of England on Saturday. He paid respect to his late mother Queen Elizabeth II in his statement at St. James’s Palace and spoke of the “huge legacy” and “the obligations and weighty responsibilities of Sovereignty which have now passed to me.”
King Charles paid respect to his mother by telling the gathering nobles, “It is my most sorry duty to report to you the death of my dear Mother, The Queen.”
The Queen, the monarch with the longest reign in the UK, passed away quietly on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle. She was 96 years old.
I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of Sovereignty that have now passed to me. In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and seek the peace, harmony, and prosperity of the people. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life.
In an homage to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles Philip Arthur George talked of the “huge inheritance and of the obligations and weighty responsibilities of Sovereignty.”
Before Charles III was crowned king, the Accession Council made an official announcement of the Queen’s passing. Before the contracts were signed, the 200 or so attendees in the chamber chanted “God save the King.”
He reaffirmed his desire to carry on the custom of giving up the inherited profits, including the Crown Estate, and his plan to do so.
King Charles continued, “I take this opportunity to reaffirm my willingness and intention to carry on the custom of ceding the hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, to My Government for the benefit of All, in exchange for the Sovereign Grant, which supports My official duties as Head of State and Head of Nation.
The 96-year-old Queen’s passing brought to an end a seven-decade reign that spanned generations and made her a symbol of stability in a turbulent globe. Official mourning has begun in the UK, and condolences are flooding in from all around the world.
